Myxomatosis disease

Myxomatosis is not a pleasant disease due to its attack on the rabbit’s face, lungs & genitals which the outcome is usually fatal. The disease is a little bit like the COVID-19 outbreak us humans are facing and can be transmitted by contact with other rabbits or by small insect bites (Fleas, mosquitos etc…) so it’s essential to keep your hutches/runs along with accessories like food bowls and water bottles clean at all times.

So what are the symptoms?

  • Inflammation on the face, ears and genitals areas (Puffiness)
  • High fever
  • Blindness
  • Lack of appetite

and the survival rate?

Sadly, if a rabbit is not vaccinated to be shielded from this disease the chances of survival is almost always fatal. The most loving thing you can do for your bunny is to get them put to sleep so they feel no suffering.

Please note: This does not mean to say that a vaccinate rabbit WILL survive, the vaccine helps boost the immune system and ultimately it comes down to the current health status of your bunny which is why we focus so hard on the quality of what we put into our treats, only the best will simply do.

So, what can I do to protect & prevent this from my bunny?

  • Number 1 has to be vaccination, BOOK your appointment it’s not worth the risk.
  • Keep your bunnies hutch/run clean regularly (use only cage safe disinfectant).
  • Do not allow your bunny to roam with wild rabbits.
  • Feed them with Good, Quality food. Cheap food is good for your pocket & not so much for the health of your pet.
